What does this mean?
From 2017 to 2020, the devices connected to the Internet will increase by 2.5 to 3.25 folds [a growth of 250% to 325%]. This, if happens, is phenomenal growth and will come with many strings attached to it. Such a huge growth in devices, mean very high number of computing devices on the network, which mean a large surface area for attackers and protectors alike. If the networks and devices are not well managed, malware and ransomware attacks are going to be common. A repetition Mirai bot-net DDOS attack can be 250% higher chance. Network and business disruption caused by such an attack is going to be huge.
Do we need to rethink?
Securing the network and devices seems to be an obvious solution. Various new security solutions are being researched and worked on.
Does just securing the network and devices, really work?
Not really, there is a need to change the way one operate the networks. The conventional way of operating networks, will not work in the scenarios of such huge scale.
The conventional way of operating network is:
Design –> Config –> Identify an issue –> Debug –> (re)Config
All the above operations are MANUAL. This will not work with networks that are growing at 60 to 100% a year.
A paradigm shift in network operation is the need of the hour.
